Typical signs

The display faults we see most often

  • Flexgate on 2016-2019 MacBook Pro models: the display flex cable fractures, producing the well-known "stage light" pattern, and stripes appear depending on how far the lid is open. Apple's exchange program for this has ended — the workshop handles the cable fix.
  • Staingate: the anti-reflective coating detaches and leaves milky blotches behind. The remaining layer is stripped off gently.
  • Cracked glass: a drop or pressure causes cracks and fractures, frequently followed by black blotches in the image.
  • Rarer patterns such as Dustgate, isolated pressure marks or a dead backlight are familiar territory for the workshop too.

Through emonis you ship your MacBook in with a free DHL label; the repair itself is done by Sadaghian ("Die Mac-Retter"). Their approach: fix the display rather than replace it, whenever that's technically possible. Your original assembly stays installed and only the faulty part gets swapped. After the free analysis you receive a cost estimate — payment happens only once you approve and the display is working again. Return shipping costs you nothing either.

What it costs

Most of the time your existing display can be brought back — depending on the damage, for €180 to €720. The complete display assembly is only replaced once nothing more can be done for the panel.

Fixing your display, panel stays in: Staingate (removing the coating): €180 · Backlight: from €220 · Flexgate on the 13-inch models 2016-2019: €240 · Flexgate on the 15- or 16-inch models: €340.

If the complete display assembly does need replacing, the price follows the display size: 13" (Air up to M4, all Pro models) €420 · 15" (Air up to M4, Pro) €480 · 14" €740 · 16" €740 — only the Intel 16" (2019) comes in at €580, and the classic MacBook Air 13" (A1466, up to 2017) at €180. For the M5 MacBook Air we currently offer no display-assembly replacement — logic board, water damage and data recovery repairs very much so.

Every price covers the free analysis, installation, a functional test of brightness, True Tone and camera — plus a 12-month warranty.

From our workshop

  • MacBook Air (M1, A2337) · business client from Hamburg · mailed in · €380 — Complete display assembly replaced and returned via DHL.
  • MacBook Pro 16" (2019) · mailed in from the Karlsruhe area · €680 — Logic board and display repair with cleaning — instead of swapping both assemblies outright.

FAQ

How much does a MacBook display repair cost?

That depends on whether your panel can be saved: fixing the existing display runs from €180 (Staingate) to €340 (Flexgate on the 15/16-inch models), depending on the fault. If the complete display assembly has to be renewed, the price follows the size — €420 to €740, with the classic Air 13" (A1466) at just €180. The free analysis settles which route it is; you pay only after your approval.

How long does a MacBook display repair take?

The free analysis is done 1-2 working days after arrival. Once you approve, the repair itself usually follows within a few working days — depending on whether the panel gets fixed or the assembly replaced. Allow 1-2 working days each way for the free DHL shipping.

Can I replace a MacBook display myself?

We'd advise against it: modern MacBook displays are glued assemblies with extremely delicate flex cables, and after a swap True Tone and calibration have to be right. One torn cable quickly turns a display fault into a logic-board fault. At the workshop, installation, a functional test of brightness, True Tone and camera, plus the 12-month warranty are all part of the price.

Does the complete display assembly always have to be replaced?

No — that's precisely the approach here: wherever technically feasible, your existing display gets repaired, for instance with Staingate, Flexgate or a dead backlight. That usually comes out considerably cheaper than a new assembly. Only once nothing more can be done for the panel does the complete swap come into play.

How does shipping work — and is it insured?

You request the free DHL label in 30 seconds — no account needed — drop the parcel off at DHL or Deutsche Post and follow every step online. The shipment is insured, and return shipping is free as well.

How do I pack my MacBook safely?

Power the device off, wrap it in bubble wrap or a soft cloth and seat it in a sturdy box with padding so nothing can shift. Only include the charger if it is part of the problem. The step-by-step guide is at emonis.com/versand.

How long is my MacBook away in total?

Allow 1–2 business days of shipping each way. After arrival, the free analysis follows within 1–2 business days; you then decide based on the cost estimate, and the repair time itself depends on the damage. You can see the current status in the portal at any time.
