MacBook Pro or Air won't turn on? When you send it in, you get a free, insured DHL label, and the analysis is free. It usually takes 1–3 working days after arrival, usually 2–3 for water damage and data recovery, and ends with a cost estimate. This page covers MacBook Air and MacBook Pro with Apple Silicon from M1 to M5 as well as older Intel MacBooks. A logic board repair starts at €100, a water damage repair at €140 and a display repair at €180. For the M5 MacBook Air there is no panel swap at the moment. Data recovery from €150 applies to Macs with a removable SSD, roughly up to model year 2017, because Intel MacBooks with the T2 chip (2018–2020) and all Apple Silicon Macs have the SSD soldered to the logic board. On these Macs the data comes back through the logic board repair. You pay only after the repair, for data recovery only on success, and you get 12 months of warranty on work and parts. If you decline, the device comes back free of charge.

Typical signs

  • No reaction at all. No picture, no sound, no fans, not even on the charger.
  • The fans run or the keyboard lights up, but the screen stays black.
  • The Apple logo appears, the progress bar stops or the MacBook restarts again and again. Sometimes a folder with a question mark shows up.
  • The MacBook seems to charge but does not start.
  • It comes on briefly and switches off again at once, or it shuts down suddenly under load.

This page covers MacBook Air and MacBook Pro with Apple Silicon from M1 to M5, and older Intel MacBooks just the same. Because the SSD on Apple Silicon is soldered onto the logic board, your files are in most cases still there after a repair of your own board, but not after a board swap.

If liquid was involved, please do not test anything yourself. Do not charge the MacBook, do not switch it on, and send it in as fast as you can. Without liquid, you can check three things before you send it in.

  1. Connect a charger and a cable that you know work. A deeply discharged Apple Silicon MacBook often needs a few minutes on the charger before it reacts. If in doubt, leave it on the charger overnight.
  2. Hold the power button for 10 seconds, let go and then press it briefly once more. On models with Touch ID the sensor at the top right is the power button.
  3. Connect an external monitor. If a picture appears there, the fault is more likely in the display than on the logic board.

On Intel MacBooks an SMC reset can also help. Apple Silicon has no such step.

In the free analysis the workshop looks for the cause. It checks, for example, these places.

  • The power supply on the logic board. Even one faulty capacitor or power-management IC can stop the start.
  • The charging circuit. If no power reaches the board, the MacBook does not start, even when the charger is fine.
  • Traces of liquid. Even a small amount can leave corrosion, for example from a leaking bottle in a backpack. It often shows only after 24–48 hours.
  • Display, backlight and display cable. If the MacBook runs but the picture stays dark, the fault can sit here.
  • System and storage. If the MacBook hangs at the Apple logo or shows a folder with a question mark, the system can also be the cause. You set in the mail-in form whether the system may be reinstalled.

If the analysis finds the fault on the logic board, read on the MacBook logic board repair page how the component-level repair works and what it costs (emonis.com/en/repair/macbook-logic-board-repair).

What it costs

You know the exact price after the free analysis. You get a cost estimate and then decide in your own time whether the repair goes ahead. As orientation, the starting prices.

  • Logic board repair from €100
  • Water damage repair from €140
  • Data recovery from €150 for Macs with a removable SSD (roughly up to model year 2017), because Intel MacBooks with the T2 chip (2018–2020) and all Apple Silicon Macs have the SSD soldered to the logic board
  • Display repair from €180

If the fault is on the logic board, the price levels by type of damage are on the MacBook logic board repair page (emonis.com/en/repair/macbook-logic-board-repair). If data recovery is the main goal, the price levels of the data recovery page apply (emonis.com/en/repair/macbook-data-recovery).

If the display needs a new panel, the price for your model is in the price list by model on the display page. For the M5 MacBook Air there is no panel swap at the moment.

The analysis and DHL shipping in both directions are free, and you get 12 months of warranty on work and parts. You only pay after the repair – your device ships back once payment is in. For data recovery you pay only on success. If you decline the cost estimate, you pay nothing.

You only pay when the repair is finished and successful – with Apple Pay, Google Pay, Amazon Pay, Link, card, Klarna, SEPA direct debit or bank transfer.

All prices in euros incl. VAT.

FAQ

How long does the analysis take if my MacBook won't turn on?

Usually 1–3 working days after arrival, usually 2–3 working days for water damage and data recovery. You then get the cost estimate, and the repair starts only after your approval. The repair in the workshop usually takes 3–6 working days, longer for extensive soldering work or a data recovery. Add the free DHL shipping with 1–2 working days each way within Germany.

Is my data safe?

If your own logic board is repaired, the SSD with your data stays in the device, and in most cases the data is still there afterwards. In the mail-in form you state whether you have a backup, whether the data is important and whether the system may be reinstalled. The device password is optional and is used for the fault diagnosis and the function test. You can enter it in its own field of the mail-in form. It is stored encrypted, and every access to it is logged. If the workshop asks for the password later, you get a secure form for it in the chat. Never send the password as a chat message.

What if the repair is not worth it?

Then you decline the cost estimate. There is no cost, the analysis stays free, and your MacBook comes back free of charge.

Do I have to send the charger?

No. Include the charger only if it can be part of the problem, for example if the MacBook does not charge. Otherwise the device alone is enough.

How do I send my MacBook in?

Fill in the mail-in form at emonis.com/en/sadaghian/mail-in. You get a free, insured DHL label. Pack the MacBook with good padding and hand the parcel in at DHL or the post office. Shipping is free from Germany and 23 more European countries, in both directions.

How does shipping work — and is it insured?

You request the free DHL label — no account needed — drop the parcel off at DHL or Deutsche Post and follow every step online. The shipment is insured, and return shipping is free as well.

How do I pack my MacBook safely?

Optional but very helpful: turn off “Find My” (iCloud) first. Then power the device off, wrap it in bubble wrap or a soft cloth and seat it in a sturdy box with padding so nothing can shift. Only include the charger if it is part of the problem. The step-by-step guide is at emonis.com/versand.

How long is my MacBook away in total?

DHL shipping takes 1–2 working days each way within Germany. After arrival, the free analysis follows — usually within one working day for display and battery problems, otherwise 1–3 working days, for water damage and data recovery 2–3 working days; you then decide based on the cost estimate, and the repair time itself depends on the damage. You can see the current status in the portal at any time.
