Typical signs
First: power off and don't plug the charger back in. Every further boot attempt risks making the damage worse. Triggers for data loss: a dead logic board, water damage, or a drop. On modern Macs (M1 through M5 and Intel with T2 chip), the SSD is hardware-bound to the logic board, so data recovery here means repairing the board far enough for the system to boot. Often you get not just the data back but a working device too.
Data recovery on M1-M5 (Apple Silicon): On Apple Silicon (M1 through M5) the flash storage is soldered to the logic board and hardware-encrypted via the Secure Enclave inside the SoC. Pulling the NAND chips off gets you nothing: without the matching SoC, the contents can't be decrypted. The only path: repair the board far enough that the system boots again. Applies to every Pro and Air model across the entire M-series.
Data recovery on T2 MacBooks: On T2 MacBooks the storage is hardware-encrypted and tied to the board as well. Same path: logic-board repair first.
Water-damage data recovery: Coffee, water, wine: whatever liquid reached the board keeps corroding from inside. We clean thoroughly and repair at component level, including severe cases.
Why us: Data recovery on modern Macs is logic-board repair at chip level, and that's exactly what we've done every day since 2015. We treat your data as confidential and delete our workshop copies after handover.
What it costs
MacBook data recovery cost
- from €150: SSD extraction on Macs with socketed SSD (models through 2017)
- €200-400: simple board repairs
- €400-600: medium complexity
- €600-800: severe damage
You only pay when the data recovery succeeds. No success means no cost, not even for the diagnosis. Free shipping Germany-wide, 3-5 working days. We copy the recovered data onto an external SSD that you ship in with the device, or one you buy from us.
From our workshop
- MacBook Pro 14" (M2 Pro) · from Hannover · €360 — Failed power-management chip on the logic board; without board repair the data would have been lost. Chip replaced, board booted again, data copied off in the workshop. The customer kept using the Mac afterwards.
- MacBook Pro 16" 2019 (Intel, T2) · from Oldenburg · €200 — One day no picture, no boot, no water damage, just dead. On T2 Macs the SSD is hardware-bound to the board, so board repair was the only path: we traced a short on the main power rail PPBus_G3H, replaced the failed charging IC. Board ran stable enough for Target Disk Mode, all data copied.
- MacBook Pro Retina 13" Mid 2014 · walk-in from Hamburg-Altona · €160 — Mac wouldn't start at all; the customer needed ten years of family photos off it. On Retina Macs through 2015 the SSD is still removable, so: SSD pulled, read via adapter, everything copied onto an external drive. The machine itself was no longer worth fixing; the data was.
FAQ
Will my data be preserved during a MacBook repair?
Yes, in almost all repairs: we repair the existing logic board instead of replacing it, so the SSD stays in place. Full board swaps and total losses are separate cases where data recovery is its own step, which we also handle.
